“Analogies between biology and architecture”

Short Bio:
His research concerns the analysis of functional analogies between biology and architecture with special emphasis on mass customization based in sustainable processes that can be materialized using CAD/CAM methods. (PhD Architect and Designer)
As suas pesquisas desenvolvem-se em torno de analogias funcionais entre a Biologia, a Arquitetura e o Design, realçando aspetos relacionados com a Personalização de Processos Industriais, a Biotecnologia e a Sustentabilidade Ambiental. As tecnologias envolvidas abrangem campos como a Robótica (CAM Computer-aided manufacturing), a Inteligência Artificial e a Genética.
Su investigación tiene como base las analogías funcionales obtenidas del cruce de disciplinas como la Biología, el Diseño y la Arquitectura, con especial interés en la producción industrial de soluciones personalizadas utilizando herramientas digitales y maquinas de control numérico (Computer-Aided Design & Computer-Aided Manufacturing).

Short Bio:
Roger Pitiot (born 1952) is a French Designer
Roger Pitiot’s career spans 30 years. He has received numerous outstanding design awards. He became a designer because he always had a passion for tearing things apart and putting them back together, and he has had a continuing interest in finding out about the nature of things…a curiosity about how the world. works .
Roger is an ENSAD Fellow, an active design consultant, and a teacher. After graduate in 1976 He joined the Design team of the Salomon Group, and participle of the settling of SX 90 the first SALOMON ski boot Designed with Roger Tallon.
He Found “Design Partners” known as DP in 1982, continuing the collaboration with SALOMON: the SX 91 presented in 1985 became a classical of design. During more than ten years, Design Partners Design all the SALOMON ski boots. Later, TEFAL, HPF, VULLI, PATRICK then SAGEM join DP. In 1989, the “Laureat” compact phones from France Telecom, became a best-seller and the American company TAYLOR MADE, became an important customer. After 10 years Design Partners broke up in 1993.
He taught in ENSAD [1] from 1992 till 1994 in the Product Design department . After renewal of the team and the birth of “cube”. CALOR, CARNAC, MILLET, FELLOWES, join the list of customers.
In 1996 began, with the KIDP[2] (Korean Institute of design Promotion) the Asian adventure in Korea..
In 1999 after one year spent in Viet Nam, he moved to Seoul. While keeping in touch with the European customers, He extended the collaboration with the Korean companies,
Since 2000 He teaches in IDAS, (post graduate school of Hongik University) in Seoul, sharing his time between education, conferences and consulting in Asia and Europe.
From February 2013 Roger Pitiot is Project studio director & Manager of the ENSCI residence at CEA Minatec IdeasLab in Grenoble.

“Bio-digital symbiosis: The Honey Scape Project”

Technology and nature are often thought as two opposed realities that are difficult to conciliate. On one hand there is some confusion between the use of computers and computation. Nature long ago developed processes of analog computation to find solutions with minimum matter and energy. On the other hand the use of computation to solve architectural problems is more recent. However computation can use bio-logics to seek holistic solutions, combining technology and nature. The installation HoneyScape will be presented as an example bridging computation and bio-logics.

Short Bio:
Gonçalo Castro Henriques, architect (Esap Porto, 2000) Master (ESARQ-UIC, Barcelona, 2005), and PhD candidate (FAUTL Lisbon, 2008), after winning a FCT fellowship. Develops research on the integration of generative processes (algorithmic and parametric design, scripting), with simulation and digital manufacturing (CAD-CAE-CAM). He published in international reference publications about his research in practice and academia (IJAC, eCAADe, Sigradi, Caadria, DACH, DCA). Involved in academia teaching previously at FAUTL, and orienting workshops (Oporto, Lisbon, S.Paulo, Fortaleza, Santa Fé, Ljubljana). Co-founder of the group X-REF, Architectural Research & development.

” Vernacular-Based Design Systems: an alternative for the reconstruction of Port-au-Prince, Haiti ”

The most common housing strategy – inherited from the modernism to deal with the provision of a large number of dwellings – often neglects the local culture and habits in favour of the idea of speed of execution and low costs, tending to the uniformization of human habitats throughout the globe.
Non-places are disseminated all over the planet by the regular sprouting of concrete “boxes”, instead of consolidating pre-existing places and creating new ones.
In order to avoid these mistakes and the consequent oblivion of the place, a different approach was proposed to deal with the massive destruction of January 2010′s earthquake in Port-au-Prince (Haiti): the development of a design system radicated in Haitian vernacular architecture that might be used as a parametric matrix for the study and development of new alternatives for the reconstruction and expansion of the city.
This design system proposes a culturally adequate design system based on shape grammars inferred from Haitian vernacular architecture design rules to help solve Haiti’s capital housing shortage. Being a [culturally and architecturally adequate] design system instead of an enclosed set of pre-established and foreign solutions to be imported, it intends to provide the intervenients in Port-au-Prince’s reconstruction – with its population (future dwellers) as a key part in this process – with a tool that allows them to deal with the complexity, quantity and variety of solutions required.
These rules, in turn, might also be combined with genetic/evolutionary algorithms in order to generate unforeseen valid solutions (maybe even better ones) and different proposals from the ones envisioned by the people, offering new alternatives to the development of the city – based on their culture and habitational habits.

“Since the beginning of my studies, first in Mechanical Engineering (IST-UTL), I was intrigued by the possible relations between science – namely biology – and design. The efficiency of natural systems, fine tuned over millions of generations, their complexity and variety are utterly inspiring.
Later in 2009, while studying architecture under Prof. José Pinto Duarte (FA-UTL), I was introduced to computational design and its possibilities – with a strong focus on shape grammars. My previous experience with programming languages, mathematics and algorithms resurfaced as a design logic: why work on a single project when you can work on an infinity of them by tweaking with a few simple rules?”

André Cruz

” Ottology: Solutions of Nature applyed to architecture”

His research focuses the existing link between Architecture and Biology based on the legacy by the german architect Frei Otto. In the biological context, his research has study this intrinsic relation in a timeless, metodologic and conceptual persperctive, emphasing the Nature’s elementarity and it’s potential to solve architectonic adversities. These values have been supported and fundamented through the work of Otto, a representative and distinguished work in the adaptation of [bio]logic analogies to Architecture.
A sua investigação foca-se na relaçao existente entre Arquitectura e Biologia tendo como elemento central, a obra do arquitecto alemao Frei Otto. No contexto biológico a sua investigação tem procurado analisar esta relação intriseca através de uma perspectiva temporal, metodológica e conceptual, salientando a elementaridade e o potencial da Natureza como resposta às adversidades arquitectónicas. Estes valores tem sido suportados e fundamentados através da vasta obra do Frei Otto, a qual tem reunido as qualidades necessárias e exemplificativas na adaptação de analogias [bio]lógicas à Arquitectura.

Short Bio:
MA architect graduated by the University of Coimbra FCTUC-dARQ.
Nowadays he establish a partnership with Mauro Costa, which allows him to continue part of his master research as well as to develop a deeper knowledge in generative architecture, parametric design and CAD/CAM technologies.
He has organized and participated in several workshops related to bionic-biomimetic-parametric architecture and CAD/CAM technologies in different academic institutions, among them the Arquibio in FCTUC/dARQ (Coimbra), the Geodesic Dpt. of Alcalá de Henares (Madrid) or the Future Traditions eCAADe in FAUP (Porto).
Currently he is working on several public and private building projects in Europe and Brazil. In the past ten years (in parallel to his academic formation and architect career) a continuous work with music and technology has been developed and orientated to electronic and experimental background.

” Bionic Integration in Urban Furniture “

Nature has offered Man a number of solutions to their problems and that is why we must continue to be taken into account in design processes, being taken as a starting point for the solution of environmental problems and sustainability present in everyday life. The Bionics, is a concept with little background research and applications of natural analogies in the area of Product Design. As the proposed work, we’ll discuss issues that seem important to the area of Product Design, establishing links between the area of Bionics and its integration in Street Furniture Equipments. This approach will allow us to check how this projectual areas are connected to each other. The aim is also develop a project that allows us to support the ideas espoused here in a way to gain more knowledge on the subject from our own experience.

(Designer) His research consists in understanding the contributions of natural elements in design through the integration of concepts such as bionics in street furniture equipment.

Pedro de Azambuja Varela

” Genetic algorithms in architecture History and relevance “

(Architect) His work has its goal in clarifying hypothesis in using search computational power in the form of genetic algorithms to find geometric solutions while designing architecture. He will start by roughly explaine the fundamentals of this type of algorithms and its mechanics and ensue by exploring some uses of this technology in architecture. * all rigths reserved *
