Workshop 2013: Workshop Instructors

Faculty Bios:

Mauro Costa is a researcher and professor at ESARQ-UIC and ELISAVA in Barcelona. He holds an European Ph.D., a Master in History of Architecture and Design, and a Master in Genetic Architectures: the New Cybernetic Design and the New Ecological Design from ESARQ-UIC, Barcelona. He also holds an undergraduate degree in Architecture from FA-UTL, Portugal.

His research concerns the analysis of functional analogies between biology and architecture with special emphasis on mass customization based in sustainable processes that can be materialized using CAD/CAM methods.
Mauro Costa has organized and participated in several design and architectural competitions, among which a first and a third place in international competitions for the design of public buildings and urban solutions, as well as others honorable mentions. Actually is responsible for the projects of several public and private buildings in Europe. He has worked for as architect and space manager, developing and coordinating office-building designs and industrial building rehabilitations. He has published and participated in conferences, exhibits and collaborates with several international institutions, among which: Toolingroup Spain and Brazil, eCAADe – Education for Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe, EIN – International School of Bionics and Architecture, International Society for Architectural Innovation, Collegi d´Arquitectes de Catalunya, Generative Components from the Smart Geometry Group at Bentley, Fórum Barcelona, Bioma, High-Tech partners and McNeel Europe.

Pablo BaqueroHolds a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design, Columbia University. He studied American Architecture at Cooper Union and Performing Arts at New York University, Bachelor of Architecture U.P.C. Bogota, and currently is a Ph.D. candidate in Esarq, Barcelona.

He has been co-teaching at (Pratt Institute with Peter Macapia and Parsons University with Andrew Macnair ) and invited to participate in final reviews as critic at GSAPP, Columbia University, Pratt Institute and Parsons University. He has worked with Frank Repas Architecture in Advanced Modeling and Emerging Systems Research. Currently, he participates in international competitions, and in teaching advanced modeling / parametric software. He has also organized various seminars/workshops related to Computation, Biology, and Digital Fabrication. Also co-teaches Digital Fabrication and is invited to participate in final reviews at Elisava, ESARQ and IED in Barcelona. Furthermore, he is involved in different research projects with Karl Chu and Alberto Estevez.

He is part of the collective publishing international articles and teaching  fabrication workhops using advance computational tools.

Andre Cruz,  is a MA architect graduated by the University of Coimbra FCTUC-dARQ. His master thesis studied the link between Biology and Architecture through the work of the German architect Frei Otto.

Nowadays he establish a partnership with Mauro Costa, which allows him to continue part of his master research as well to develop a deeper knowledge in generative architecture, parametric design and CAD/CAM technologies.
He has organized and participated in several workshops related to bionic-biomimetic-parametric architecture and CAD/CAM technologies in different academic institutions, among them the Arquibio in FCTUC/dARQ (Coimbra), the Geodesic Dpt. of Alcalá de Henares (Madrid) or the Future Traditions eCAADe in FAUP (Porto).
Currently he is working on several public and private building projects in Europe and Brazil. In the past ten years (in parallel to his academic formation and architect career) a continuous work with music and technology has been developed and orientated to electronic and experimental background. * all rigths reserved *
